GENERAL INFORMATION

CONFERENCE ORGANIZER:

Richard von Glahn. Please contact me at vonglahn@history.ucla.edu if you have any questions.

MEETING VENUE:

The conference will be held on the UCLA campus in the History Conference Room, Bunche Hall, Room 6275 (6th floor). To locate Bunche Hall, please consult the campus map at http://www.ucla.edu/map/viewmap.html . Click on ìNortheastî; Bunche Hall will appear in the F3 square on the map grid, beneath ìMurphy Sculpture Garden.î The Wyton entrance to the campus is located on the right side of the map (G3; marked with an arrow); the parking kiosk is indicated by the letter ìiî enclosed in a black circle. Parking Lots 3 and 5 are indicated as P3 and P5.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

Rooms have been reserved for participants who have requested lodging for Friday and/or Saturday nights at the Century Wilshire Hotel (phone: 310-474-4506), located near the UCLA campus at 10776 Wilshire Blvd. (between Malcom Ave. and Selby Dr.). For a locator map and picture of the hotel, see the webpage at: http://hotels.citybase.com/servlet/reservations.PropertyInformationXML?netrate=yes&remote=citybase&propno=59162#map

(Note: this is a commercial website; do not reserve a room through this site, since we will have made reservations for you.)

The hotel has free parking, but no restaurant (there is a restaurant in the Doubletree Hotel just east of the Century Wilshire, across Selby Dr. on the same side of Wilshire Blvd.). The hotel does provide a complimentary continental breakfast. Walking from the hotel to Bunche Hall takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Transportation will be provided to pick up participants at the hotel at 8:20 am on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and to take people back to the hotel after dinner on Saturday and to the airport (LAX) at the conclusion of the conference on Sunday.

DIRECTIONS TO HOTEL:

For those traveling by automobile, take the 405 (San Diego) Freeway to the Wilshire Blvd exit. Exit east on Wilshire Blvd. The Century Wilshire Hotel is approximately a half-mile east of the freeway (3 blocks east of Westwood Blvd.), on the south side of Wilshire Blvd.

PARKING AT UCLA:

Anyone with a faculty or staff (but not student) parking permit from another UC campus has reciprocal parking privileges at UCLA. You will need to obtain an electronic gate key, however, so please stop at the parking kiosk at the Wyton entrance (off Hilgard Ave.) to pick up one (see the UCLA campus map at web address mentioned above). You need to bring your home campus parking decal. Anyone else who needs parking on campus should contact me directly, and I will arrange for a parking permit. Parking Lots 3 and 5 are closest to Bunche Hall.

DIRECTIONS FROM HOTEL TO UCLA:

By car: Turn right leaving the hotel and immediately cross over to the left turn lane before the next intersection (Selby Dr.). Turn left on Selby, and then left again at the next intersection onto Lindbrook. Turn right at the next intersection onto Malcolm. Continue on Malcolm until the street ends in a T-intersection at Westholme. Turn left on Westholme, and at the first traffic light turn right on Hilgard. At the next traffic light (Wyton) turn left into the campus. At the stop sign proceed straight ahead to the parking kiosk, where you can pick up an electronic gate key for the parking structures.

On foot: Follow the same instructions as for cars as far as the intersection of Westholme and Hilgard. Instead of turning right at Hilgard, cross Hilgard and enter the campus. The Westholme entrance drive quickly ends at a T-intersection. Turn right and follow this street (Charles Young Drive East) north, past the Faculty Center, Murphy Hall, and Dodd Hall. The street will make a 90-degree turn to the left. Follow the turn until the street makes another 90-degree left turn (in the direction you originally came from). Bunche Hall is the grayish 11-story building to your right.

TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENTS:

The MRU will reimburse participants for their travel expenses (airfare, airport parking, airport shuttle/taxi, car mileage). Please save all receipts. Those flying into LAX should take a shuttle van (destination: Westwood) to the hotel, which costs approximately $15. For a group of two or more sharing a taxi probably will be cheaper. Anyone who is not a US citizen or permanent resident please be sure to notify Richard von Glahn in advance; the UC bureaucracy requires extra paper-work in such cases.

PAPER PRESENTATIONS:

Presenters are allotted 20 minutes to allow adequate time for discussion. Presenters should send a written paper or some version of your planned remarks to me (if you havenít already done so) by Wednesday, November 26. Discussants should limit themselves to 15-20 minutes, depending on whether there are two or three papers on the panel. I will arrange for an LCD projector (for Powerpoint presentations) and an overhead projector; please let me know if you need more exotic audio-visual equipment.

WEB PUBLICATION:

Abstracts of papers will be posted on the MRU website (http://ucworldhistory.ucr.edu/). If you would like to have your paper posted on the MRU website, please let me know. Following the conference selected papers will be posted at the University of Californiaís eScholarship Repository. Those interested in having their papers (or a revised version thereof) included should please let us know. Randy Head will provide an update about the eScholarship Repository at the meeting.
